Marco on Holocaust Denial

I usually read Marco Tabini’s blog looking for PHP related stuff. Today however, I came across a very well written post by Marco on holocaust denial - apparently commenting on current events in Iran.

Being an Israeli and Jewish, this is a very touchy subject of course. But beyond that, being a person who sees studying history from all it’s directions as a possible cure for the ignorance of mankind, I find holocaust denial an interesting an important subject.

Once, I used to think that holocaust deniers should just be ignored. I mean, most of these people happen to be racists or just antisemitic - and I don’t think there is even a single serious researcher who agrees with such opinions. They should not be given the attention they are seeking and using.
Now I believe that this is not entirely correct. Things like holocaust denial should be treated very seriously - by teaching historic facts, not in a vacuum as Marco says, but as a serious of events. By letting our selfs and our children know what led to the holocaust, we provide them the tools to facing holocaust denial and hopefully, we make sure they do not let such chain of events happen again.

Now for those of you who don’t know or remember what was that chain of events, let me put it shortly: We let a crazy man say crazy things to his economically and socially distressed people. We ignored him, and he kept saying those crazy things until people believed him. When people believed him, they were willing to die, and even worse, kill millions.

Does this sound familiar?
